The Natural Nasal Cycle

How Breathing affects Your Mind

Did you know that your body has a natural nasal cycle, a rhythmic alternation between the left and right nostrils occurring every 90 minutes?  This breath cycle plays a vital role in regulating the autonomic nervous system and fostering a sense of tranquility and peace. During times of stress and anxiety, we may develop unhealthy breathing patterns such as shallow or rapid breathing, disrupting our natural nasal cycle. This disruption can trigger an overactive sympathetic nervous system response, commonly known as the ‘fight or flight’ reaction, leading to a disturbance in our body’s natural balance and overall well-being, ultimately affecting our health and quality of life.

Alternate Nostril Breathing

Breathing for Calm and Relaxation

Explore the ancient yogic practice of alternate nostril breathing to reset your natural nasal cycle, calm your nervous system, and bring your mind back to a peaceful state. By gently alternating nostrils, you can harmonize the flow of breath, promoting relaxation and reducing stress levels. To practice, sit comfortably with a straight spine, close your right nostril with your right thumb, inhale deeply through the left nostril, then close the left nostril with your ring finger and exhale through the right nostril. Inhale through the right nostril, close it, and exhale through the left nostril. Repeat this pattern for several minutes, focusing on the sensation of breath moving through each nostril. Embrace this simple yet effective technique to cultivate tranquility and balance in your mind and body.
